I'll leave the detailed review and setlist to someone else but just say that this was a damn good show. Wang is a beautiful, huge theater and we had amazing front row seats (thank you, Ravenhouse). Decent crowd, theater seemed full. I have never before felt so old at a concert (i'm 30 and I felt like dad taking the kids to a show).
Oakley Hall was excellent and Gillian Welch/David Rawlings blew me away. Best part was their set was over an hour long, really a concert in itself. Some pics of the openers:
Bright eyes played a very solid set- like I said I didn't keep track of setlist but it seemed similar to past shows. To be honest I preferred the more stripped down sound on the Four Winds tour to this 13 piece setup but a good set nonetheless.
Anyway, things got interesting during the encore. Welch/Rawlings came out to play with Conor on Lua and another song whose name I don't know. After that the rest of the band came back, along with the singer from Oakley Hall, and the intro to Road to Joy started. Things started fairly normal:
Then more random people started showing up on stage, and things started getting crazy-sometime around "MAKE SOME NOISE" Conor decided he didn't need the strings on the guitar anymore
then decided to rip apart the flowers on stage and throw them into the audience
then decided that his acoustic guitar needed to be destroyed
and the drums
And that was that. At this point the rest of the band pretty much filed off, not really knowing what to do, some looking a bit annoyed. Someone threw a giant flower pot on the keyboard to keep it playing, then threw it on the stage. Pretty funny, the only person who stayed and kept playing was the sax player- stood on some box and played like crazy until someone finally pulled him down. Then the lights came up, and that was it.
Really odd ending to a good show- completely chaotic, stuff flying around everywhere on stage and into the audience. I'd be curious to hear how it came off to people futher back in the theater/balcony, pretty crazy from where I was standing... |

The "best song we know" is Gillian Welch's Miss Ohio..and I think the first one was a Man Named Truth. |
